What are Today’s Hottest Social Media Jobs In New York?

New York is the top city in the world for Advertising and Public Relations. Social Media has become an integral part of both of those worlds. So those looking for Social Media jobs such as Social Media Manager, Social Media Expert and many more should be looking in New York City.

As the newest incantation of Public Relations many companies need masters of the social media world to manage their participation.

What is Social Media?

Growth in social media has created many new jobs at some of the well known social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus.  One platform that some consider part of the ecosystem is YouTube.  Online video is exploding and YouTube is the second most used search engine in the world.  People love to watch video, especially funny videos.

Some of the newer Social Media jobs are at the hottest participants including SnapChat, Vine, Meerkat and Periscope, which was recently acquired by Twitter.

We’re mostly familiar with the big 4 but what do these new social media platforms do?

The social media app Snapchat is built around telling your story with  pictures.  Snapchat is a text, photo and video-messaging app that you use to send messages that will disappear one to ten seconds after your friend receives them. You determine how long the recipient can view the message.

Your Snapchat Story is essentially a group of images that you’ve captured and would like to share over the span of 24 hours. You choose who can access your Snapchat Story, whether it’s your friends only, a custom list or the public. Snapchat Stories live slightly longer than regular snaps, but after 24 hours they will self-destruct.

For most of us with short attention spans,  Vine combines our love of video with brevity by offering only 6 second videos.  People upload a 6 second video and then share it with all their friends.  Believe it or not there are some Vine “stars” who have built followings in excess of 12 million.  The top 10 Vine “stars” have over 7 million followers each.

Meerkat and Periscope are all about the now.  Both offer the ability to broadcast live video right from your phone.   Imagine calling Mom from the Great Wall of China with a live video broadcast.  That is what these social media apps are about – being social in real time. Recently Periscope became a major contributor to TV piracy when Mayweather Pacquiao fight was rebroadcast to thousands of users using individual’s Periscope accounts.
