A major headache for e‑commerce retailÂers and online shopÂpers alike looks set to be conÂsigned to hisÂtoÂry, thanks to the launch of eCoupon-verÂiÂfyÂing startÂup, ZenDeals.
A soluÂtion for the eCoupon headache
There’s a big probÂlem with eCoupons. While 88 milÂlion AmerÂiÂcans used them in 2011 alone, as many as 76 perÂcent of them don’t work because they’ve become invalid. It was a frusÂtraÂtion like this that led ZenÂDeals co-founder ChristoÂpher Couhault and a group of his budÂdies to hatch their new idea.
He’d been asked by his wife to buy baby diaÂpers online, but when he went lookÂing for coupons to lowÂer the price, he could find none that were curÂrentÂly valid. He and a bunch of friends (all of whom are felÂlow co-founders) set about testÂing 30 difÂferÂent coupons before they finalÂly found one that was actuÂalÂly redeemable.
The reaÂsons why there are so many invalid eCoupons are legion. ProÂmoÂtions linked to speÂcifÂic coupons may expire, they may have been issued by retailÂers as sinÂgle or limÂitÂed-use codes that go dorÂmant after use, or they might have conÂdiÂtions attached, like only being valid on a cerÂtain day of the week. All of which add up to throbÂbing veins in the temÂples of e‑commerce manÂagers, e‑commerce anaÂlysts and shopÂpers alike.
A giant marÂket awaits
The firm has spent the last eighÂteen months using the rumored $1 milÂlion+ it raised in seed fundÂing to develÂop techÂnolÂoÂgy capaÂble of aggreÂgatÂing, algoÂrithÂmiÂcalÂly verÂiÂfyÂing and delivÂerÂing qualÂiÂty, redeemable coupons from dozens of eComÂmerce giants to online shopÂpers. Sites include leviathans like AmaÂzon, Macy’s, Gap and TarÂget, while investors include (unnamed) execÂuÂtives from FaceÂbook and ZynÂga, as well as InnoÂvaÂtion Endeavors.
HowÂevÂer, develÂopÂing that techÂnolÂoÂgy hasn’t been an easy process – hence the 18 month run-in to marÂket. But now the SilÂiÂcon ValÂley based startup’s comÂbiÂnaÂtion of cloud comÂputÂing and machine learnÂing algoÂrithms means that it has been able to valÂiÂdate five milÂlion coupons and codes since beta testÂing began earÂliÂer this year. It curÂrentÂly tests thouÂsands every day. Each coupon is testÂed sevÂerÂal times a day to make sure the data is still fresh and usable.
ZenÂDeals takes a small comÂmisÂsion from retailÂers and pubÂlishÂers for each coupon it verÂiÂfies. But with 88 milÂlion coupon users out there, this litÂtle venÂture looks set become big busiÂness very soon.
