This week Microsoft revealed that it is dropÂping its estabÂlished free email serÂvice HotÂmail for OutÂlook email, to proÂvide betÂter WinÂdows and Office inteÂgraÂtion, conÂnecÂtion with social media serÂvices, and othÂer features.
HotÂmail was acquired by Microsoft in 1996, and since then it has enjoyed sucÂcess as a free online email serÂvice, though Microsoft is now phasÂing out this client in favour of the new brand OutÂlook (availÂable to try as a preÂview at Outlook.com) bringÂing new feaÂtures that many state have been a long time coming.
This re-brandÂing effort is nothÂing new. Microsoft were origÂiÂnalÂly planÂning to phase out the serÂvice with the introÂducÂtion of WinÂdows Live Mail in 2006, but the conÂfuÂsion over what this new serÂvice proÂvidÂed and the want of develÂopÂers to stick with the already popÂuÂlar HotÂmail name caused Microsoft to change its name to WinÂdows Live HotÂmail instead.
But it appears now that there is enough incenÂtive, and enough applicÂaÂble updates, for a comÂplete rebrandÂing to make sense for Microsoft. IntroÂduced at the start of this month, the serÂvice manÂaged to gathÂer 1 milÂlion accounts in only 6 hours. Much of this figÂure will no doubt be existÂing HotÂmail users who can simÂply click a butÂton on their email page to upgrade to Outlook.
This rebrandÂing effort is hapÂpenÂing for two reaÂsons; to make Microsoft’s free email serÂvice more comÂpetÂiÂtive with Google’s HotÂmail, which is curÂrentÂly the fastest growÂing email serÂvice with 31% of the marÂket share, and to align their email serÂvice with the office email brand. HotÂmail is still the largest free email serÂvice in the world with roughÂly 324 milÂlion users, but Gmail’s rapid rise to domÂiÂnance means that this sitÂuÂaÂtion might change very soon, meanÂing there has nevÂer been a more useÂful time to rebrand.
Outlook’s New Features
There are many new feaÂtures with OutÂlook, with conÂnecÂtivÂiÂty and netÂworkÂing feaÂtures now makÂing Microsoft a true conÂtender with Gmail. OutÂlook will allow the user to conÂnect with social media and netÂworkÂing serÂvices such as TwitÂter, FaceÂbook, LinkedIn and even Google+, and also Microsoft’s cloud data storÂage serÂvice SkyÂdrive. It is said that Skype video chat will also be available.
OutÂlook also proÂvides inbox organÂiÂsaÂtion tools that help to sepÂaÂrate daiÂly subÂscripÂtion and social media updates into sepÂaÂrate foldÂers, threadÂed mesÂsages and office 365 online docÂuÂment integration.
VisuÂalÂly, the new OutÂlook design is clean and simÂple with a Metro style, not comÂpleteÂly disÂsimÂiÂlar to Gmail, with inconÂspicÂuÂous adverÂtiseÂments that will apparÂentÂly not be the ‘creepy ones’ that Google uses based on perÂsonÂal user search history.
What do These New FeaÂtures Mean?
These new feaÂtures are good news for comÂputÂer users who are using the powÂer of netÂworkÂing to increase their proÂfesÂsionÂal visÂiÂbilÂiÂty, with Microsoft finalÂly proÂvidÂing a free cenÂtralised email hub to conÂduct all netÂworkÂing activÂiÂties and social media netÂworkÂing. SerÂvices such as LinkedIn and Google+ are becomÂing imporÂtant for proÂfesÂsionÂal netÂworkÂing, findÂing out more about employÂers and employÂers, getÂting the word out and buildÂing up your own proÂfesÂsionÂal list of conÂtacts, and Outlook’s comÂpatÂiÂbilÂiÂty will cerÂtainÂly help to facilÂiÂtate this.
