Found­ed in 1975, The Philadel­phia Gay News is Philadelphia’s largest and old­est pub­li­ca­tion tar­get­ed to the les­bian, gay, bisex­u­al and trans­gen­der com­mu­ni­ty.

The Award Win­ning LGBT Week­ly seeks an Expe­ri­enced Edi­tor who will over­see all facets of the week­ly pro­duc­tion of PGN’s print and dig­i­tal pub­li­ca­tions.

Philadel­phia ranks among the top 10 LGBT-friend­ly cities in the Unit­ed States accord­ing to a 2015 study con­duct­ed by Nerd­Wal­let, and is “tied for the high­est score in the Human Rights Cam­paign Munic­i­pal Equal­i­ty Index” for its “nondis­crim­i­na­tion and rela­tion­ship recog­ni­tion poli­cies, LGBT ser­vices and rela­tion­ship with the com­mu­ni­ty.”

In the Philadel­phia metro area, near­ly 4% of the pop­u­la­tion iden­ti­fies as LGBT. “In Philadel­phia,” Nerd­Wal­let writes, “the heart of LGBT nightlife is cen­tered in what is nick­named “The Gay­bor­hood,” and the city is home to sev­er­al civ­il rights, advo­ca­cy and LGBT youth orga­ni­za­tions includ­ing the Bread & Ros­es Com­mu­ni­ty Fund, the Spruce Foun­da­tion and the Gay and Les­bian Lati­no AIDS Edu­ca­tion Ini­tia­tive.”

The Exec­u­tive Edi­tor Role:

He or she will man­age news­room and graphic’s full time staff and free­lancers, con­ceive of and assign sto­ry ideas, work­ing with in-house and free­lance writ­ers on sto­ry devel­op­ment, and man­ag­ing dead­lines.

The Exec­u­tive Edi­tor will assist with writ­ing, from break­ing-news items to head­lines to long-form fea­ture sto­ries. The edi­tor will edit and proof­read all sto­ries pri­or to pub­li­ca­tion, pro­vid­ing feed­back on style, focus, sto­ry devel­op­ment, fact-check­ing, accu­ra­cy, con­sis­ten­cy, etc. The edi­tor will be respon­si­ble for field­ing sto­ry pitch­es and mon­i­tor­ing the issues and ideas impact­ing read­ers to ensure all areas of the com­mu­ni­ty are rep­re­sent­ed fair­ly and accu­rate­ly.

In addi­tion to the above the edi­tor will be expect­ed to cul­ti­vate rela­tion­ships with com­mu­ni­ty stake­hold­ers in order to advance read­er­ship, as well as con­ceive of and imple­ment long-range edi­to­r­i­al projects to do the same. He or she will lead PGN’s dig­i­tal-engage­ment efforts, includ­ing plan­ning and imple­ment­ing a social-media strat­e­gy, uti­liz­ing Face­book, Twit­ter, Insta­gram and oth­er social-media chan­nels. The edi­tor will be respon­si­ble for moti­vat­ing a team atmos­phere in the news­room, and will iden­ti­fy and trou­bleshoot poten­tial issues to ensure depart­men­tal dead­lines are met.

The Exec­u­tive Edi­tor Must Haves:

  • Supe­ri­or writ­ten and ver­bal-com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills
  • Supe­ri­or news judg­ment ‑Abil­i­ty to work inde­pen­dent­ly and Lead a staff
  • Abil­i­ty to work under tight dead­lines
  • Abil­i­ty to take an active role in mar­ket­ing con­tent brands
  • Demon­strat­ed under­stand­ing of and abil­i­ty to exe­cute new media strate­gies

Exec­u­tive Edi­tor Qual­i­fi­ca­tions:

  • Bachelor’s degree in jour­nal­ism, com­mu­ni­ca­tion, Eng­lish or a relat­ed field
  • Min­i­mum of Five years writing/editing expe­ri­ence in a news­room or relat­ed orga­ni­za­tion
  • Expe­ri­ence man­ag­ing pro­fes­sion­al social-media accounts, par­tic­u­lar­ly Face­book, Twit­ter and Insta­gram
  • Expe­ri­ence with a CMS
  • Pro­fi­cien­cy in Asso­ci­at­ed Press style
