Instagram is in the process of upping their editorial team by hiring former journalists to track down up and coming Instagram influencers. It appears a larger and larger number of these platforms are spending more time developing the media for their own outlets. Snapchat, Facebook, even LinkedIn have tried to create content but it is usually at odds with the overall nature of tech companies to streamline all their processes. Let’s face it, making content is time consuming and labor intensive.
Instagram wants to hire 5 more people to build up daily editorial with legitimate editorial types.
They are looking for a senior editor with at least eight years of editing experience; a community editor with five years’ experience. Recently they hired Alex Suskind, formerly from Esquire, Sports Illustrated and New York Magazine for the platform’s music editor.
Currently Instagram’s editorial team has a dozen people who are seeking out the most interesting Instagrammers, so they can write features about them. These will in turn be read by instagrams 300 million monthly users. At present they are posting twice a day on their blog and the reason is because Instagram just keeps growing. They are also increasing international news and content since 70% percent of the users are outside the United States.
They’ve even gone as far as adding community managers in the UK and Brazil. They are even on the prowl for someone who can write about the French scene on Instagram. But make note that there has been a ton of hire and fire situations for these tech companies hiring editorial teams. Many of which only last a year, it has been a struggle. What is keeping Instagram in a viable position is the editorial team is housed under marketing will help it to avoid content misunderstandings and difficulties.
Even through all the growth Instagram is working on they do not plan to go beyond its current blog and move into longer form content articles. They do however see editorial as an important element. By promoting unknown influencers Instagram will be able to boost numbers and followers and increase their user engagement. This alone is the sole reason for the tech platform, get stats and sell ads!
