Founded in 1975, The Philadelphia Gay News is Philadelphia’s largest and oldest publication targeted to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The Award Winning LGBT Weekly seeks an Experienced Editor who will oversee all facets of the weekly production of PGN’s print and digital publications.
Philadelphia ranks among the top 10 LGBT-friendly cities in the United States according to a 2015 study conducted by NerdWallet, and is “tied for the highest score in the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index” for its “nondiscrimination and relationship recognition policies, LGBT services and relationship with the community.”
In the Philadelphia metro area, nearly 4% of the population identifies as LGBT. “In Philadelphia,” NerdWallet writes, “the heart of LGBT nightlife is centered in what is nicknamed “The Gayborhood,” and the city is home to several civil rights, advocacy and LGBT youth organizations including the Bread & Roses Community Fund, the Spruce Foundation and the Gay and Lesbian Latino AIDS Education Initiative.”
The Executive Editor Role:
He or she will manage newsroom and graphic’s full time staff and freelancers, conceive of and assign story ideas, working with in-house and freelance writers on story development, and managing deadlines.
The Executive Editor will assist with writing, from breaking-news items to headlines to long-form feature stories. The editor will edit and proofread all stories prior to publication, providing feedback on style, focus, story development, fact-checking, accuracy, consistency, etc. The editor will be responsible for fielding story pitches and monitoring the issues and ideas impacting readers to ensure all areas of the community are represented fairly and accurately.
In addition to the above the editor will be expected to cultivate relationships with community stakeholders in order to advance readership, as well as conceive of and implement long-range editorial projects to do the same. He or she will lead PGN’s digital-engagement efforts, including planning and implementing a social-media strategy, utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social-media channels. The editor will be responsible for motivating a team atmosphere in the newsroom, and will identify and troubleshoot potential issues to ensure departmental deadlines are met.
The Executive Editor Must Haves:
- Superior written and verbal-communication skills
- Superior news judgment ‑Ability to work independently and Lead a staff
- Ability to work under tight deadlines
- Ability to take an active role in marketing content brands
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to execute new media strategies
Executive Editor Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, English or a related field
- Minimum of Five years writing/editing experience in a newsroom or related organization
- Experience managing professional social-media accounts, particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
- Experience with a CMS
- Proficiency in Associated Press style
