4 Reasons Mobile Phones and Devices will Rule our World

4 Reasons Why Mobile Phones will Rule our World

At the 2013 Ad Age Digital Summit it was impossible to go more than 5 minutes without hearing the words mobile phone, Smartphone or tablet.  If you are a Business Development Manager, Social Media Manager or Digital Marketing Manager,  Mobile Phones are or will become a major part of your world. Here are four reasons why mobile phones may become the number one marketing focus:   Reason #1: Mobile Phone Payments to be $1 Trillion by 2015 Starbucks accepts over 3 million mobile payments each month from their 10 million mobile phone users according to Alexandra Wheeler, Starbuck’s VP Global Digital Marketing.   We’ve all heard about payment Wallets like Google Wallet, Square and many others.  You may have seen the Citibank commercials where they are sending money from their mobile phones.   Ken Moy, Senior VP-Group Head, US Emerging Payments Lead from MasterCard expects every connected device to become a commerce device.  Ken’s stats from the Yankee Group estimate that by 2015 there will be $1Trillion in mobile payments and that 19% of shoppers in 2015 would pay for their in-store purchases with their mobile phone. Reason 2:  The Facebook Effect – Share of Mobile Time In the last 12 months…

Can an app improve mental wellbeing?

Research suggests that over a quarter of people will suffer with a mental health problem at some point in their lives and pretty soon these people could be accessing an app rather than undergoing therapy. The team behind social game SuperBetter claim they can now heal your mind, and with the launch of the app just around the corner, could people with mental health issues really be reaching for their smartphone to access an app, rather than call the doctor? Re-focusing the Offer The decision to re-nose the focus of SuperBetter and aim it at mental health coincides neatly with the aforementioned app launch, but also with the start of clinical trials designed to show how SuperBetter can strengthen mental resiliency and help users combat stress, anxiety and depression. The decision to refocus the offer was based on feedback from the 125K existing users. SuperBetter currently offers players the chance to make a game out of life’s challenges, which include anything from housework to divorce. Players can turn these onerous tasks into games that they can overcome with the help of anonymous allies and friends. So far, the most user engagement has been with those aspects of the game that…

The Coming Wave of Mobile Internet

Will cellular phones become the computer of choice for most people?  With 6 billion phones vs 1.2 billion computers the question may have already been answered. There are seven billion people in the world yet there are only 1.2 billion computers, according to All Things D. However, there are nearly 6 billion cellular phones, many of which have the ability to browse the internet from handheld devices rather than formally sitting down in front of a computer. In fact, according to a graph from Mary Meeker’s 2012 Internet Trends presentation, mobile internet traffic in India surpassed desktop traffic in April of 2012 and the gap between the two has only widened since. Meeker’s study goes on to state that mobile internet use worldwide will surpass desktop use by 2014. Considering current desktop internet traffic is more highly monetized than mobile internet usage, this means there is a lot of money that can be made in the mobile browser space. It also means being on the internet has become even more seamlessly integrated into our everyday lives, as easy as reaching into your pocket and pressing gently on a screen. How Mobile Advancements Are Making This Possible Technological advancement has helped…

Walmart Mobile App Check out by Phone

To combat long waits at Walmart check out lines, the company is testing a new smartphone mobile app checkout system at some of its stores.  Customers would scan their items with their phone and then bring everything to a self checkout counter for payment. Walmart has already announced that it plans to add self checkout lines to its stores but, if the latest mobile app initiative is implemented,  it could lead to even faster check outs.  Read more on this story.

Mobile Advertising vs. Mobile Apps – Where Should I Work?

With over 30 percent of Americans owning Smartphone’s, Mobile advertising is a nascent and fast growing opportunity, according to Business Insider. Mobile advertising is a type of advertising displayed on phones or other mobile devices such as iPads. There are several different types of advertising such as text, graphic images as well as animated ads. Furthermore, 50 percent of all purchases are preceded by an Internet search and more than $1 billion is spent on mobile advertising each year. This number is expected to reach $4.39 billion by 2015 which means working in mobile advertising or digital media jobs is likely a good idea since the industry seems to be growing. Another industry that you can work in is the development of mobile apps. Mobile apps, formerly referred to as mobile applications, are software devices for handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets. This might include a game or an application to help you find a local restaurant, keep track of your expenses or track how many steps you walk each day. It takes times to learn how to develop mobile apps, but income can be lucrative if you become a talented developer. This is because you can sell the…
