New York has a tech comÂpaÂny that despite its freÂnetÂic creÂativÂiÂty almost shuns pubÂlicÂiÂty; howÂevÂer, as any prodÂuct manÂagÂer workÂing in tech can tesÂtiÂfy, when your comÂpaÂny gets to raise a thunÂderÂing $79 milÂlion in Series D, it’s hard to keep it quiÂet. That is what Quirky the tech startÂup has done in its three short years of life, attractÂing eye-popÂping investÂments now totalÂing £175 million.
$30 milÂlion of the latÂest round came from GE VenÂtures, with much of the rest comÂing from existÂing investors Andreessen Horowitz; RRE VenÂtures, NorÂwest VenÂture PartÂners and KleinÂer Perkins Caulfield & Byers. CuriÂous prodÂuct manÂagers will be ponÂderÂing on how such a young comÂpaÂny has garÂnered such immense venÂture funding.
From idea to shelf
FoundÂed by Ben KaufÂman (now its CEO), Quirky aims to bring innoÂvÂaÂtive new invenÂtions to the marÂketÂplace via its globÂal netÂwork of invenÂtors, prodÂuct influÂencers and its own expert prodÂuct design team. That’s how ideas locked in people’s heads get to reach the store shelves, nurÂtured from the earÂliÂest stages to the last by Quirky’s community.
Any vesÂtiges of skepÂtiÂcism lurkÂing in the mind of our curiÂous prodÂuct manÂagers will be disÂpelled with one look at the company’s growth. It startÂed off by makÂing plasÂtic kitchen prodÂucts with a develÂopÂment team of one, and has since expandÂed into far more comÂplex tech gadÂgets with a prodÂuct develÂopÂment team now numÂberÂing 75.
A prodÂuct manager’s dream partnership
The process has undoubtÂedÂly been assistÂed by its partÂnerÂship with GenÂerÂal ElecÂtric, which began in April this year, and came to fruition last week with a batch of four new prodÂucts they built jointÂly. AvailÂable to buy from Best Buy and Home Depot, they include a motion, light, sound, temÂperÂaÂture and humidÂiÂty senÂsor, a smart powÂer strip, a smart egg tray and a real-life deskÂtop widÂget – all conÂtrolled by Quirky’s very own proÂpriÂetary smartÂphone app, Wink.
Things are now set to go from strength to strength; GE will make thouÂsands of its patents availÂable to Quirky. They include thin-barÂriÂer coatÂings for elecÂtriÂcal devices, asset-trackÂing techÂnolÂoÂgy and holoÂgraphÂic and fast-focusÂing lens techÂnoloÂgies. The Wink app will not only conÂtrol all new prodÂucts, Ben KaufÂman says, but will funcÂtion as an open platÂform for othÂers to build on top of.
