If you’re on the lookÂout for a new job, is LinkedIn PreÂmiÂum a worÂthy investÂment, or should it be left to the recruiters and cold callers?
We all know that if you’re lookÂing for media or techÂnolÂoÂgy jobs – in fact any jobs – then LinkedIn is the place to be, and its preÂmiÂum serÂvice claims to offer both ready access to potenÂtial employÂers that may be outÂside of your netÂwork, and the abilÂiÂty to conÂtact peoÂple direct using the InMail funcÂtion. But is upgradÂing to the PreÂmiÂum verÂsion a wise investment?
Chances are if you’re lookÂing for a new job then you’re probÂaÂbly strapped for cash so every penÂny you spend on your search has to work hard for you. Let’s have a look at the stats:
In the first quarÂter of 2012 LinkedIn postÂed revÂenue of around $188 milÂlion. This means turnover’s grown 101 per cent year-on-year and in that same quarÂter it grew its memÂberÂship by a cool 15 milÂlion. The comÂpaÂny is rapidÂly approachÂing revÂenue of $1 bilÂlion and is enjoyÂing a conÂserÂvÂaÂtive growth rate of about 70 per cent. In that stelÂlar first quarÂter of 2012 it revealed PreÂmiÂum account revÂenues of $37.9 milÂlion – up 91 per cent on the same periÂod in 2011.
The numÂbers stack up pretÂty well, but that doesn’t necÂesÂsarÂiÂly mean that the bells-and-whisÂtles verÂsion of LinkedIn will be the answer to your prayers.
How Do You Use It?
The answer to whether or not PreÂmiÂum will work for you depends largeÂly on how you use the serÂvice in the first place. Recruiters for instance, will undoubtÂedÂly see the benÂeÂfits in the serÂvice. With 160 milÂlion memÂbers, anyÂone who makes a livÂing lookÂing for peoÂple or cold callÂing will relÂish the opporÂtuÂniÂty to make direct conÂtact with those who may be outÂside of their sphere, withÂout havÂing to be introÂduced and endorsed.
Many PreÂmiÂum users believe that the peoÂple they make conÂtact with outÂside LinkedIn will look them up and check out their proÂfiles to see if they’re someÂone worth talkÂing to, and when it’s used in this way LinkedIn can add much-needÂed credÂiÂbilÂiÂty. TypÂiÂcalÂly, the PreÂmiÂum serÂvice is ideÂal for peoÂple who want to find othÂer peoÂple who may be out of their iniÂtial network.
Prices start at $20 per month for PreÂmiÂum BusiÂness, while BusiÂness Plus will set you back $42 per month. Both levÂels offer InMail and increased search results – again, helpÂful tools for peoÂple lookÂing for people.
BenÂeÂfits of LinkedIn PreÂmiÂum include:
- Top of the pile when applyÂing for jobs – much like a sponÂsored link on Google
- Full details of who’s viewed your profile
- Send InMails to influÂencers and key conÂtacts that aren’t in your network
- ProÂfile OrgaÂnizÂer- lets you monÂiÂtor conÂtact with othÂers, save favorites and add notes to othÂer people’s profiles
- Access to excluÂsive webiÂnaÂrs and video tutoÂriÂals to help you optiÂmize your job search
What about Jobseekers?
So we know that PreÂmiÂum brings benÂeÂfits for recruiters, but what about those lookÂing for jobs? Is it worth shelling out when the very purÂpose of LinkedIn in its most basic form, is to conÂnect businesspeople?
Using InMail will get you in front of the peoÂple that matÂter and your proÂfile is attached autoÂmatÂiÂcalÂly to every outÂgoÂing mesÂsage, makÂing it more likeÂly that the recipÂiÂent will have a look at your details. Using InMail to reach out to employÂees at a comÂpaÂny you want to work for will make your resume realÂly stand out.
By using the proÂfile organÂisÂer you can save the details of the proÂfiles you’re viewÂing, add notes and file them for easy access. This can be useÂful when you’re viewÂing many proÂfiles and can act as a handy refreshÂer on who’s who. InforÂmaÂtion on who’s viewed your proÂfile can be used to get in conÂtact with those who may be interÂestÂed in you – you might even find that you’re interÂestÂed in them too. If you opt-in to OpenÂLink any memÂber can conÂtact you for free while disÂplayÂing the covÂetÂed PreÂmiÂum badge on your proÂfile can, accordÂing to LinkedIn, attract 15 times more proÂfile views than those with a free account.
Some peoÂple feel the abilÂiÂty to conÂtact whoÂevÂer you like, is intruÂsive and that growÂing your conÂtacts organÂiÂcalÂly is more credÂiÂble. Plus, if the recruiter is using PreÂmiÂum sureÂly they’ll find you, won’t they?
ProÂfiles’ Kate Rojek sums it up niceÂly: “If you are just a stanÂdard proÂfesÂsionÂal who’s just tryÂing to do stanÂdard netÂwork and tryÂing to be found, you will be found. You don’t necÂesÂsarÂiÂly have to pay a PreÂmiÂum fee.”
One way that PreÂmiÂum may help those huntÂing for work is by givÂing them access to the prime movers and as such, the prime jobs. By using the InMail serÂvice you could, in theÂoÂry at least, send your resume to whoÂevÂer, whenÂevÂer, and while this may seem like a fanÂtasÂtic idea to some, othÂers may baulk at the idea of sendÂing unsoÂlicitÂed resumes to CEOs and VPs. After all, we know some users already find PreÂmiÂum tools intruÂsive, so firÂing off InMails to busiÂness leadÂers might not do you any favours.
Rather than dependÂing on what kind of user you are, it seems that the effecÂtiveÂness of PreÂmiÂum depends on what kind of perÂson you are.
