QVC: A History of Home Shopping Dominance

QVC, standing for “Quality, Value, and Convenience”, holds the title of the largest cable television shopping business in the US. Here’s a glimpse into their journey:

  • Origins (1986): Founded by Joseph Segel in 1986, QVC aimed to be an alternative to the already established Home Shopping Network. Partnering with cable companies and leveraging the growing cable subscription rates, QVC quickly gained traction.
  • Early Growth (1986–1992): Strategic alliances with industry giants like Sears and advancements in telecommunication played a crucial role. QVC’s interactive approach, combining television, cable, and telephone lines, resonated with the increasing mail-order shopping trends.
  • Reaching New Heights (1990s): By 1993, QVC’s two channels reached a staggering 45 million cable-equipped homes and 3 million satellite dish customers. This period witnessed their rise as an industry leader.

Along the way

Based in West Chester, Pa., and founded in 1986, QVC has retail operations in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Japan, and Italy. Worldwide, QVC reaches 350 million homes via its 12 broadcast networks and reaches millions more via multiple streaming services, websites, mobile apps, and social pages.
