AdColony – the startup aiming to deliver the best mobile video advertising experience on the planet

Back in 2008, few with media jobs in the fledgling mobile advertising industry would have even thought about deploying videos; but fast forward to the present, and it’s clear that both constitute gigantic market opportunities and the time for a fusion is ripe – a fusion that startup mobile advertising firm AdColony is already working with. Loading time? What loading time? What a difference five years can make; in 2008, the chief reason why mobile advertising agencies steered clear of video was because the loading time was just too frustrating for users; in 2013, that’s no longer the case. AdColony, which launched in 2011 and now has offices in New York, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco, aims to keep users in the apps it advertises on with a triple-A content experience. And thanks to its proprietary InstantPlay video technology, it’s succeeding. Its high-resolution videos have zero loading time. AdColony has an audacious vision: it aims to provide nothing less than the best quality mobile advertising experience in the world with video, simultaneously serving advertisers, publishers and consumers. And it’s doing so by delivering highly engaging video experiences that keep viewers hooked on the content. Short, sharp and savvy AdColony’s…

NativeX helps advertisers pinpoint exactly the right mobile users with psychographic targeting

Not many 13-year-olds can truthfully claim to have the power to triple revenues from in-app mobile advertising; however, native mobile advertising firm NativeX – year of birth 2000 – claims to be able to yield benefits like this with its new ‘psychographic’ targeting technology. A new breed of mobile advertising targeting technology People holding media jobs in mobile advertising agencies will doubtless note a certain disingenuousness in the opening sentence: a young company is not quite the same as a young human being. In 13 years, however, the Minnesota-based company – which began life as W3i and was rebranded to NativeX in March this year – has developed what it proudly describes as “the most precise demographic targeting technology to date.” NativeX points out that most of its rival companies use a couple of attributes at most to target mobile ads – typically location and device type – but NativeX’s technology weighs up hundreds of thousands of additional attributes, including education, ethnicity, income, age and gender, and many, many more besides. Armed with data as nuanced as this, advertisers can home in on the precise type of user they are seeking. Bieber, Beyoncé or bears? By way of an explanation about…

Mobile marketing will generate a million new jobs by 2015 says new research

People on the lookout for media jobs might do well to turn to the mobile advertising industry over the next couple of years. A new study commissioned by the Mobile Marketing Association predicts that mobile marketing will generate approximately 1 million new jobs and $400 billion in incremental output to the U.S. economy by 2015. Media jobs vs. regulation The trade organization’s study has a dual purpose, to persuade marketers to increase their spend on mobile advertising and to illustrate mobile marketing’s potential to create jobs. But to be frank, the MMA also wants to stave off the potentially stultifying effects on media jobs of over-zealous regulation. As its CEO, Greg Stuart, put it, “Asking a bunch of people who are unfamiliar with mobile marketing to set up digital policy might inhibit innovation. Let’s not stifle job growth.” Media jobs in mobile marketing will climb from 2012’s total of 524,000 to 1.4 million by 2015, the study projects. Mobile advertising agencies are set to have their work cut out for them too, as more firms turn to mobile marketing. The study forecasts that mobile marketing spending will skyrocket from $6.7 billion in 2012 to just short of $20 billion in…

Tumblr says yes to mobile advertising with new app

Mobile advertising agencies have a new app to focus their attentions on thanks to a new initiative by the blog network Tumblr. The rise of mobile It’s only a few months since six-year-old Tumblr started letting advertisers pay for optimal placement but, according to its VP Derek Gottfrid, the number of people using the network’s mobile product has soared by 400 per cent in the last six months.  All of a sudden, mobile phones advertising starts to look enticing. That’s why the network has now opened the doors to mobile advertising courtesy of a new app. The new product is expected to help make Tumblr its first annual profit this year once advertisers sign up to debut it. The network’s head of sales, Lee Brown, claims that the average advertising purchase has now reached “just under six figures.” The New York-based startup has enjoyed impressive success over its short life and now plays host to around 100 million blogs, all of which can be themed. The range spans the cerebrally artistic, like displays of a photographer’s best work, to distinctly quirky, like the dog which can balance food on its head. Users can share content from their own blogs or…
