Diffbot – Machine learning is the new Big Data and Giving it away might be a Money Maker.

Machine learning is the new Big Data and Giving it away might be a Money Maker.

“Everything’s becoming intelligent, but the limiting factor of intelligence is access to structured data,” Tung says. Diffbot, an artificial intelligence company that helps clients extract and combine data from multiple Web sources wants to scrape all the data on the web (all of it) to put it into a structured format. Making it useful for all sorts of business purposes and make money doing so.  The company says its technology “uses computer vision and NLP algorithms to extract and structure any web page into the world’s largest structured database… with no human curation or oversight.” Founded in 2009 The Palo Alto, CA-based startup announced today it raised $10 million from investors to expand its “knowledge-as-a-service” offerings to businesses and consumer apps.  They have raised close to $13 million since its seed round in 2012.  Diffbot’s plan is to catalog trillions of facts across the Web—many of them drawn from page elements such as comment forums, which can’t be mined by traditional search engines. Web-mining can be a competitive advantage for apps as well as the proliferating devices of the Internet of Things, Tung says. The startup says it has made a significant start on that goal, having indexed 1.2 billion…

Which Video Streaming Providers will Survive in the Next 5 Years?

Which OTT Providers will Survive in the Next 5 Years?

There are many more OTT providers than you realize.  One service offers to provide you with 600 channels. A Mashable article promises 33 Ways to Watch Free TV Online and of course there are the usual suspects; Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, CBS, Crackle and the list goes on and on. By the way the industry term for Video Streaming is OTT for over the top. But Which Video Streaming Providers will Survive and Why? In Secret Formula to Win the OTT Race Keith Zubchevich talks about the importance of quality over quantity.   But how do you measure quality? In our data crazed world most surely the algorithm masters will find a way. Some would say that quality programming only comes from experienced directors and producers.  Some of the most successful shows like House of Cards and Homeland are created, written and produced by seasoned professionals. It’s difficult to guarantee the creation of lots of successful shows.  OTT providers will employ different strategies to accomplish this objective.  Perhaps some OTT providers may opt to buy cable networks and/or a cable company.  Perhaps Amazon will buy Comcast. Are YouTube Stars Professional? Would you consider Michelle Phan, one of the longest sustaining YouTube stars…

Fuse Li-Fi and LED Fabrics together and you get the Future of Media?

What could the Future of Media look like if you fuse Li-Fi and LED Fabrics together?

So if you recall not too long ago I had written about Li-Fi or light fidelity and how it was a game changer. Well it so happens that the inventor Professor Harald Haas has recently presented a TED talk showcasing a prototype example of how his “light internet” would work. I’ll reiterate again what this is, “broadband transmission using the Visible Light Spectrum or VLS. This is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, just like radio waves, is safe, practical to use and multi-functional”. So with standard-off-the-shelf LED’s (light-emitting diode), numerous tests were made and it appears that LED lighting fixtures can transmit wireless data at very competitive high speeds. I definitely recommend that you watch the TED talk here: A commercial product started shipping several months ago as Haas has launched a commercial venture called pureLiFi. The product, Li-Flame, turns standard LED fixtures into wireless Internet access points. Let’s take this idea a little further. You know we’ve also been following wearable tech like Disney’s EM-Sense, but what would happen if the clothes you wore on your body was a Li-Fi hotspot or hub? Well you know that the applications can only be guessed at but researchers at the Korea…

Why Amazon will Buy Comcast

Why Amazon will Buy Comcast

The concept of world domination used to be relegated to science fiction movies however Amazon may yet become one of the first to make it a reality. Their recent addition of the Streaming Partners program could be the start of Amazon as the world’s first global OTT (over the top) programming provider. With 83.5% of Facebook users and 79% of Twitter users coming from outside the US, companies today must be globally focused to truly compete and grow.   Comcast business is limited to the US.  With cable systems passing about 44% of all US homes and 22 million subscribers it has a strong presence but only in the US. Amazon is a global company; According to Mark Mahaney, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, 37% of its 80 million Prime subscribers are from outside the US and is growing quickly. But Why Should Amazon buy Comcast? Amazon’s foray into OTT is the precursor to the separation of the programming platform from the wired cable.  I believe that sometime in the next 3 to 5 years most cable companies will sell broadband access only and the program offerings will be spun off into separate companies which will have lots of competition…

What does Google’s D-WAVE, Blippar, and Machine Vision have to say about where media is heading?

What does Google’s DWAVE, Blippar, and Machine Vision have to say about where media is heading?

So why is a computer being able to see be so darn important, I’ll tell you why, so advertisers can know exactly who you are, wherever you are, and send a highly targeted product advertisement at you through some pretty clever channels. Let’s imagine a far future scenario, like in 16 months from now, where you are walking down the street and the HD digital display screen which is in actuality the glass of a storefront you happen to be passing near calls out to you specifically. “Hey Jeremy! I love the Ralph Lauren Jacket you’re wearing. We just got in the 2017 bold cut of that jacket in Dark Green, take a look” The display screen proceeds to show you what you would look like by overlaying the new jacket on top of the old while maintaining the street view behind you by using Augmented Reality. The display then proceeds to say “if you come in and buy one right now, we’ll offer you a %10 percent discount”. You say to yourself, damn, I look great in this jacket and walk right on in. SUCKER!!!! Honestly scenarios like this are in development right now. Not as cohesive as the…
