Techcrunch Disrupt NY 2016: New Job Prospects

Techcrunch Disrupt NY 2016: New Job Prospects

Techcrunch Disrupt brought over 100 new startups to Brooklyn NY from May 9th the 11th 2016 for three days of presentations, meet and greets and new ideas.  Media Jobs talked with a number of them. Here is our first sampling of some of the interesting innovations we came across: Lumenus @lumenuslife started by an avid mountain biker, Jeremy Wall, is all about bike safety.  Jeremy and his partner created clothing and a Bluetooth app that communicates your route to other motorists using lights in your outerwear.  Jeremy launched the business by selling his first 325 jackets in a Kickstarter project that raised $55,000 which paid for the app and the development. How would you like to spend the same amount of money this year on your credit cards but earn three times the points?  That’s lots more free trips for doing nothing different. Except one thing of course, joining Birchfinance.  According to Alex Cohen @alexcohenbirch, founder of Birch with his partner Alex Whiteside, the Chief Technology Officer, there is a very lucrative audience of points aficionados’’ who will be very interested in their program.  If the results subsequent to their presentation at Disrupt NY 2016, where 186 people signed up within…

Want to work for Google or AirBNB? Move to Cuba

Want to work for Google or AirBNB? Move to Cuba

With most of the world explored and exploited Cuba may yet be a new uncharted frontier for media and tech careerists. Cuba may yet be the greatest opportunity for this millennium so far with digital expansion one of the priorities. Seems like everyone wants to get “into the act” including the Rolling Stones offering a free concert (pushed back for 5 days due to the President’s visit). Cuba Broadband Internet Access is Top Priority In one of Obama’s first speeches after his arrival he emphasized the importance of broadband when he stated that “expanding Internet access for Cubans is key to changing the country”. But the rush is on…Google has announced that it will be providing WiFi and Broadband access in Cuba, Western Union is expanding operations and AirBNB has announced that it will be opening up all its Cuba listings on April 2nd. According to the Associated Press, Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist, Vin Cerf, spent more than an hour talking to an audience of Communications Ministry officials and recent computer science graduates at the 2016 International Computer Science Fair, a government-run symposium on information technology and communications. If there was ever an opportunity to get in on the “ground floor” this…

The Ed Tech Company Worth over $1 Billion Dollars

ed tech company the learning company

Can anyone make money selling ed tech?  One company thinks so and could be valued at over $1 billion dollars. It all starts with the ABC’s with the mega kids app called ABCmouse. The holy grail for jobs at app companies or other tech jobs or media jobs isn’t to land a job at Google, or Microsoft, or Apple. It’s landing a job at the next Google or Microsoft or Apple before they get there. To find that company, you want to look at any nexus between a current or coming societal change and technological advances. One of the markets where this is currently happening is educational technology. The Ed Tech Opportunity Ed tech is fast approaching a $10 billion market, and educational reform is a huge issue in our culture, so opportunities should be abundant. But while there have been some great products and ideas developed, the next mega-company hasn’t yet emerged. At least not in the public eye. Enter ABCmouse, a learning app for children between ages 2 and 7 (currently, 2-8 soon) made by educational start up The Age of Learning, based in Glendale, CA. As far as educational start ups or ed tech go, you could say they’re starting to get…

5 Virtual Reality Jobs that Pay the Most

5 Virtual Reality Jobs that Pay the Most

The Virtual Reality job market is about to explode.  With the recent introduction of the Oculus Rift and Microsoft Hololens two of the largest companies in the world have begun to stake their claims in the newest high growth market. Technology generally directs how we live our lives in modern times. Microwave ovens changed how we eat, cable television changed how we spend much of our free time and consume news, and smartphones have changed how we communicate and, frankly, how we do almost everything. This trend will continue to accelerate as we become more and more technologically advanced in the world, and the frontier which is set to provide the next huge evolution in civilization is undoubtedly virtual reality. Virtual reality can be simply defined as ‘near reality’ or ‘almost reality’, an emulation of reality based in technological constructs. We think of reality as being made up of what our senses can detect, but in truth there are more than just the five senses we normally think of. For instance, we have a sense of balance. This ‘sense’ can’t be squarely placed under the heading of sight, touch, sound, smell, or taste. This somewhat vague idea of our senses can be…
