What Will Making a VR Game While in Virtual Reality be like?

What Will Making a VR Game While in Virtual Reality be like?

Everyone pretty much knows at this point that Virtual Reality is finally starting to take off in a big way and develop into the uber-cool piece of futuristic awesomeness that we’ve drooled over in sci-fi movies and TV shows for decades. One of the companies that has a lot to gain from these advances and is also actively adding to them is Unity, creators of one of the top game engines around today. Unity has finally released it’s highly anticipated suite of VR editing tools in a free download for developers called EditorVR, and it’s incredible. Building Virtual Reality inside VR If you’re not a developer, the simplest way to describe EditorVR is as a VR game for VR developers. When a gamer plays a VR game, they get to interact with their surroundings in an almost real way, picking things up and moving them around as they move their real hands and arms to do the same. That fun interactive experience is possible because the game developers spent endless hours with a mouse and keyboard programming it to work that way, then switching to a VR headset to check and make sure it worked right. Then switching back to the mouse…

UltraHaptics – Control Everything with Just the Wave of a Hand

UltraHaptics - control everything with just the wave of a hand

What is UltraHaptics up to and where is this taking us?  Sound is a really fascinating thing. It’s just vibrations in space, which theoretical physicists think is what makes up all matter. If you’re an X-Men fan you’ll remember Banshee, the guy who could cause destruction with his screams. The interesting thing is that his mutant ability mimics reality, but it’s not the volume of the scream so much as the frequency. In fact, some scientists have postured that the ancient Biblical story of the impenetrable walls of Jericho falling at the blast of a bunch of trumpets (or shofars) totally could have happened. So back to the premise – sound is fascinating. And the applications now being developed in ultrasound (the frequencies that humans can’t hear) might be the next big evolution in virtual reality. Then again, they might also soon make it easier for you to drive your car without distractions or control your home stereo with virtual haptic controls. A 70’s Throwback In the 1970’s scientists explored the idea of using ultrasonic waves, or ultrasound, to create simulated tactile sensations or haptics – meaning feeling something that wasn’t actually there. But computers and programming weren’t there yet, and the…

How Massive Can You Make Virtual Reality, literally?

How Massive Can You Make Virtual Reality, literally?

Ever since the Oculus Rift hit Kickstarter several years ago, VR enthusiasts have been on the edge of their seats waiting for the brave new world powered by virtual reality… which to date has been slow to come at best and a dud at worst. Oculus got swallowed up by Facebook and has been sitting in a pile of hopeful applications yet to come ever since. Samsung’s Gear VR is being practically given away on street corners in an attempt to gain users. Everybody else in the game is experiencing similar results. That might be because as cool as it is to sit in one place and be able to experience concerts or sports events from around the world in 3D while on your couch, and as cool as it is to be immersed inside of a game instead of playing as – really – more of an observer of the action than a part, the holy grail of VR is still what most people dream of and are waiting for. Anyone who has read any of my posts regarding virtual reality, augmented reality, or the like know that I’m referring to, of course, a Holodeck-like experience. True immersion comes when…

Houzz – Transforming Homes into Augmented Reality Shopping Malls

Houzz - Transforming Homes into Augmented Reality Shopping Malls

In writing about Houzz I find myself referencing the Holodeck from Star Trek way too often, but with good reason – it’s simply the coolest sci-fi idea ever (and it’s coming – you know it is). With that disclaimer out of the way, here I go again. Imagine if you could look around your living room or bedroom and see a blank canvas in place of some things. Get rid of your couch, your chair, your dresser, or whatever you think is need of an upgrade or replacement without having to actually move it. Imagine that you could virtually scroll through image after endless image of other living rooms or bedrooms, spot something in them that strikes your fancy, and then see that particular item in your Holodeck-enabled home. Old couch gone, the new one you saw in a picture sitting in its place. The idea makes the interior decorator in you get really excited. And that is pretty much what the home remodeling platform Houzz is allowing anyone and everyone to do now. Houzz is becoming increasingly popular, with the Android version of their app being voted best app of the year in 2016.   400% sales growth year-over-year from 2015, and…

What is Happening at UBER at this Very Moment?

What is Happening at UBER at this Very Moment?

Well if you thought Uber had developed a lot of enemies in the taxi business before by bringing a new level of competition to the somewhat monopolized industry, you can bet that those enemies will be even more incensed with the company’s latest move – and perhaps ironically, bring the very drivers that they gave a new lease on working into the enemy fold. In the last week Uber has unveiled their fleet of self-driving cars in the test market of Pittsburgh, PA. But before you pull out your smartphone to jump into the future, you should know that not everyone in the area will necessarily get one of these autonomous vehicles when they call for a ride. And those who do will be joined by an Uber driver sitting behind the wheel just in case and another in the passenger seat taking notes. A handful of Ford Fusions make up the small group of self-driving Uber cars in the city, but there will soon be Volvo XC90 SUVs joining the fray, once they’ve completed testing in Sweden. And if you happen to be one of those chomping at the bit for a ride in one because you think it will…
