Marriot and Samsung turn your Hotel room into a Virtual Reality Fantasy Hub!

Marriot hotels is trialing a new entertainment service that would bring Virtual Reality into your rooms with a Samsung VR headset and headphones. The team up of Marriot and Samsung are calling it the “Vroom Service” and are testing it for a couple of week in their New York and London hotels. The VR headsets and headphones will be delivered direct to a guest’s bedroom where they can enjoy an “in-room virtual reality travel experience.” Last September Marriot had tried a full sensory simulator that utilized an Oculus Rift heasdset with environmental control (i.e., wind, smell, temperature) for giving virtual guided tours of Hawaii and London. Coinciding with the Vroom Service will be “VR Postcards”, an all-new VR content platform that provides an “intimate and immersive travel stories that users experience in 360 3D via a virtual reality headset”. Matthew Carroll VP at Marriot Hotels says “VRoom combines storytelling with technology, two things that are important to next generation travelers.” Some of your first VR experiences will be an ice-cream shop in Rwanda, Chile’s Andes Mountains, and the streets of Beijing. If VR just isn’t your thing, Marriot also locked down Netflix (jobs at Netflix) for your hotel room TV. Sweet!…

Why You Want to Work at Amazon

Why You Want to Work at Amazon

After reading the recent New York Times article  Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace  it occurred to me that the article wasn’t really about Amazon being a difficult place to work but rather the story of Amazon being the place to be to prepare for tomorrow’s workplace. In the not too distant future most companies will be run by computers.  Yes there will still be people managing the computers but most of the work will be done by the machines, which will replace many of the current employees. Amazon is one of the most advanced companies in the world regarding automation of business processes and decision making. Based on the New York Times article it appears that Amazon has already implemented many processes that future companies will be managed by. While many tech companies appear to be moving in this direction,  I believe Amazon has advanced the most towards the future company employment world. Data and algorithms drive much of the decision making at the company.  Virtually all the pricing and product display decisions you see on the Amazon website are solely made by algorithms. Amazon is where you could be trained to be the next generation executive. At Amazon…

On-Demand Manufacturing, MakeTime Inc. coming to a planet near you!

On-Demand Manufacturing, MakeTime Inc. coming to a planet near you!

On-Demand Manufacturing to the rescue! Almost 500 manufactures have recently signed up as a purchaser or vendor of machine time. What does this mean? It means that thanks to a company a little more than half a year old, companies in need of manufacturing (computer-programmed machinery) services can be aligned with companies that have idle machines ready to be used. The company is called MakeTime Inc. Buyers and sellers on MakeTime upload project specifications that would need CNC machines—typically lathes, drills, laser-jet and other machines used to forge products out of metal, wood or other materials—via computer programs designed to meet exact manufacturing specs. An example would be, if you needed 1000 industrial components you created in CAD/CAM (jobs for CAD/CAM) and wanted them at the end of the month; post it on MakeTime.io and receive price bids from multiple companies with available machines. When you pick someone you like and a price is agreed upon for the project, you’ll pay MakeTime. When this happens they’ll pay the manufacturer half upfront and then the remaining minus MakeTime’s %15 percent cut once you approve the job was completed to your satisfaction. MakeTime has a vetting system in place for determining the…
